I’m an avid reader and can’t imagine not having books to fall back on. And I’m lucky that both teenagers also choose to read for fun. But my eldest stopped reading as a leisure activity during his GCSE’s when he had to read texts that he felt were entirely irrelevant and boring. They studied in detail A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Othello, An Inspector Calls and endless war poetry. I mean, it’s enough to suck the joy out of anyone isn’t it! The state school curriculum needs to have a rethink of the texts! Also, I do feel for parents of kids who don’t read, it’s yet another way to be made to feel like you’re failing 🤦🏻‍♀️

You're so right, school can suck the joy out of books. I didn't read for enjoyment in my 20s really at all - probably as a result of school/uni endless compulsory reading. It took me a while to come back to it.

I love these tips! Whenever I feel burnt out on reading, I turn to a fun and silly murder mystery—even listening to the audiobook!

I love audiobooks! Although I do listen to more nonfiction (because it's just like a podcast if it's the author reading their own work), as I tend to find the actors annoying in fiction audiobooks. Having said that, I did listen to All Fours narrated by Miranda July herself, and that was very good!

Ah, yes! I love listening to nonfiction audiobooks, too!
